This research aims to determine the different social factors that influence the design of smart cities, leaving aside technological variables, but not their relationship with the social aspect; supported by studies conducted from not only social perspectives, but also considering those of the engineering and technology area. It starts with the analysis of the definition of smart city to continue with a review of related works; it is followed by an in-depth study of social factors associated with the design of smart cities, ending with the conclusions of the research. Among the variables of social nature mentioned repeatedly in various investigations are the economic, political, security, health, educational and human capital. This last factor is the perception (of people), quality of life, values, mobility, density, and so.
