Robotic and intelligent process automation: A systematic literature review: Advances, challenges and opportunities

Abstract

Rapid technological advancement and new business challenges have created a need for companies to digitally transform their processes to streamline tasks, reduce time, increase productivity, and focus on decision-making. It is evident that digital transformation facilitates the integration of technologies, promoting organizational growth. This article presents the results of a systematic review of scientific literature published between 2021 and 2025, analyzing the challenges, advances, and opportunities posed by Robotic Process Automation (RPA/IPA) in organizations. The methodology applied was based on a systematic literature review, using specific search strings in various academic databases and establishing rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria for a successful search for relevant contributions. Various publications exploring the implementation of both strategies to strengthen business process management and decision-making through the implementation of emerging technological tools and data analytics algorithms were analyzed. A brief comparative study was also conducted. The results confirm the feasibility of implementing these types of technologies for process automation, contributing to the reduction of costs and workloads related to repetitive tasks and generating competitive advantages within organizations.
